BYE BYE BLUBBER: POST DELIVERY EATING

The first step to losing weight is obvious. Throw away all of the junk food in your house and replace it with fruits, steamed vegetables, proteins, grains and yogurt. Ask your parents and in laws to bring over healthy foods so you have them at the ready when hunger strikes. In exchange for their generosity, load them up with all of the fattening “treats” people drop off to celebrate the birth of the baby. Here’s the catch 22 about post-pregnancy weight loss. Food is the last thing you want as you stare at that spare tire dropping over your jeans. But, eating is required to bolster your metabolism. High protein, fruits and whole grains boost energy and burn calories. Instead of eating three big meals, have 4 to 5 small meals per day so you keep your metabolism fired up. Stop eating by 7pm. Frequent meals keeps your blood sugar steady so you don’t fall victim to binge eating. Also, Keep healthy snacks-whole wheat crackers, dried figs, carrots and fruit-in your purse so you don’t succumb to junk food pit stops.

My friend Lauren Slayton, author of  The Little Book Of Thin also has some excellent insight into getting fit with what she calls “delicious de-bloaters.”

“It’s pretty amazing what can happen to our bodies even in 48 hours of focused, clean eating. These are fun, quick fixes but they work (and many of those stars use them). To avoid feeling and looking bloated, skip the 3 C’s: canned food, carbonated beverages and cocktails (yup). While you’re at it skip sweet and wheat. Work the water- we can debate the amount of water you need for optimal health but the amount to look your best? A lot. You need fluid to shed fluid so have 96 onunces a day of filtered water, 2-4 cups unsweetened green tea and 1 green juice (1 fruit max in the juice) as well. Next, consume asparagus, dandelion greens, ginger, lemon and parsley–these foods each have different ways of extinguishing that extra layer, you know that layer. Potassium helps you shed sodium, parsley is a great source and so are dandelion greens (and dandelion tea). Probiotics in asparagus feed good gut bacteria (it’s the bad bacteria that leads to bloat).

To speed up the loss of water weight:

  • + Drink fennel tea. Fennel is a diuretic which helps you knock out water weight and flush toxins.
  • + Squeeze lemon in all beverages Lemon (a key ingredient for the infamous Master Cleanse) is another diuretic that helps the body eliminate water weight and toxins. FYI, seltzer and lemon is a great way to curb the appetite until its time for your next meal
